A Straight Teen Asked His Gay BFF to Prom in Front of Entire School

In Depth

Forget everything you’re read about teens in the past few weeks. Yes, they’re moody and rambunctious. Yes, they do dumb shit and sometimes they are awful bigots…BUT sometimes they’re also incredibly sweet and caring and can look past social constructs and just be cool with people who are different. Like this kid who asked his gay friend to prom.

This story, which has been picking up steam all week, is sweet enough that it will make even the most hardened heart melt just a little. Two students at Desert Oasis High in Las Vegas are making headlines after a unique promposal (god, that word, though) in front of the whole school has become a lesson in love and acceptance.

Anthony Martinez is Desert Oasis’ incoming student body president. While he’s a big part of organizing dances and making sure everyone has a good time, he’s also never been asked to a dance by another guy. So he did what any other teen would do: he tweeted his frustration about always having to go to dances alone.

Well, he tweeted twice:

His frustration is understandable. It sucks not to get invited to dances, and sometimes it’s hard to ask someone yourself. While Anthony was just blowing off a little steam, his best friend, Jacob Lescenski, who knew how important prom was to Anthony decided he was going to do something about his friend’s despair, even though he isn’t gay.

Jacob created a huge sign, had friends hold it, and presented it to Anthony on April 21st during school. Which is awesome, because I couldn’t see this happening 13 years ago when I was going to prom. I don’t even know if we would have seen something like this ten years ago, maybe not even five. But for Lescenski, being an ally and caring about his friend’s feelings was much more important than anything anyone could say would be.

Here’s his awesome sign:

Please note that this sign is much more attractive than anything I could come up with and was made in a hurry. Please also note that aside from the fine workmanship of the actual sign, that rhyme is straight fire. While the rest of us were barely getting through the poetry section of our AP English Lit classes, Jacob was just throwing out heat like it was nothing. I am 31 years old and I still couldn’t come up with something that looked or rhymed better than this. (I can barely write my own name without getting it wrong, though.)

Of course Anthony said yes and he and Jacob have been winning accolades ever since, with thousands of people favoriting and retweeting Anthony’s announcement to show their support. And the best part, aside from how awesome prom is going to be for these two — someone get them a limo and a table at Denny’s for before —, is the post that Anthony wrote on his tumblr, about the whole thing.

Guess who got asked to prom! BY A STRAIGHT GUY (Army pants). he’s my best friend, and a real man given the fact he has the guts to fulfill my gay student council dream of always helping out planning dances, and never getting asked. I couldn’t ask for a better person in my life.
Thank you Jacob can’t wait for May 2nd!

The guys are grateful for all the support and wish they could respond to everyone, so they made this cute video to thank people who are happy for them.

Anthony did answer one important question, though. When asked whether he and Jacob would be dancing together all night, he wrote this:

Im assuming since we are taking picture then going to eat the going too the dance then going out to either watch a movie or hang out with our fiends. But wed dance together aways even if he didn’t ask me. were just weird. believe me.

That’s not weird, you guys, it’s the future!
